HMO plans have great dental!
A Medicare HMO plan generally limits you to the plan network of health care providers, which may include dentists in your area.
Non-emergency dental care received outside of the plan network will typically not be covered under the plan. Unless this was due to auto injury or accident
Where to search for a dentist: Start by looking in the network associated with your plan. The Carrier does provide a list of providers in hard copy that is mailed out with your plan. Be sure to look through that first to see if your existing dentist accepts the plan.
PPO or POS plans
If you have a Medicare PPO or a Medicare POS plan that offers dental coverage, you may be able to visit a dentist outside the plan network. However, your out-of-pocket costs may be lower if you visit a dentist in your plan provider network. POS is usually a part of an HMO program. So finding a dentist is a resource where you would look at providers in the network first.
PPO will allow you to go out of network but you will pay more. You are better off finding someone within the network for routine work.
Private Fee-For-Service Plan (PFFS)
Medicare PFFS plans that provide dental coverage typically do not have a defined network of dentists. Members are free to seek out care from any provider, as long as that provider accepts the terms and conditions of the plan. These plans however tend not to come with prescription drug coverage. Also if the dentist does not agree with the terms of the PFFS contract they can charge you according to their bill pay system.
