Humana HMO Plans

A Humana HMO plan is a health maintenance organization. You will need to select a primary care physician from the list of in-network providers and you will need to get a referral from this doctor to see a specialist. Most HMO plans do not have out-of-pocket maximums, which means that there are no limits to the amount you could spend on medical care in a year.

Humana HMO-POS Plans

A Humana HMO-POS plan is a hybrid of an HMO and a POS plan. Like an HMO, you will need to select a primary care physician from the list of in-network providers. However, unlike an HMO, you do not need a referral from your primary care physician to see a specialist. You also have the option of seeing out-of-network providers, but you will pay more for these services. Most HMO-POS plans do not have out-of-pocket maximums.

Humana PPO Plans

A Humana PPO plan is a Preferred Provider Organization. You do not need to select a primary care physician and you do not need a referral to see a specialist. You can see any in-network provider without paying more for these services. However, if you see an out-of-network provider, you will pay more for these services. Most PPO plans have out-of-pocket maximums, which means that there is a limit to the amount you could spend on medical care in a year.

Humana PFFS Plans

A Humana PFFS plan is a Private Fee-for-Service plan. You do not need to select a primary care physician or get a referral to see a specialist. You can see any doctor that accepts the Humana PFFS plan. However, you will pay more for these services if you see an out-of-network provider. Most PFFS plans have out-of-pocket maximums.

Humana Special Needs Plans

Humana offers three different types of Special Needs Plans:

SNP: A SNP is a Special Needs Plan for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid, or for people who have certain chronic conditions.

D-SNP: A D-SNP is a Special Needs Plan for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid, and who also live in an institution, such as a nursing home.

C-SNP: A C-SNP is a Special Needs Plan for people who have certain chronic conditions.

Humana Medicare Stand-Alone Prescription Drug Plans

Humana offers three different types of stand-alone prescription drug plans:

Basic: The Basic plan has a low monthly premium and covers Tier I and II drugs.

Enhanced: The Enhanced plan has a higher monthly premium but covers Tier I, II, and III drugs.

Premium: The Premium plan has the highest monthly premium, but covers all tiers of drugs.

Honorable Mention (Humana Supplemental Insurance)

Last but not least we want to mention supplemental insurance plans. Supplemental Insurance is coverage you purchase to help pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by your regular health insurance plan. This includes deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Some supplemental plans also cover things like vision, dental, and hearing care.

Supplemental plans are not the same as Humana Medicare Advantage Plans 2023. Supplemental plans are sold by private insurance companies and are not regulated by the government.

The most popular supplemental plan is Medigap. Medigap is a type of supplemental insurance that helps pay for some of the out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as deductibles, and coinsurance which is 20%. The top two plans offered are the G and N Plan.
